Hydrovac Excavation and Utility Daylighting Explained
Hydrovac excavation uses pressurized water to cut soil into a slurry and a vacuum system to lift that slurry into a debris tank on the truck. It exists for one reason: you cannot safely put a bucket or an auger on top of a live gas main, a fiber duct bank, or a primary electric feed. In Oklahoma that is not a preference, it is statute. Under 63 O.S. 142.7, powered or mechanized equipment may not be used directly over the marked route of an underground facility until the facility has been exposed and properly protected, and OKIE811 lists vacuum excavation as an accepted method inside the tolerance zone.

CI/ASCE 38-02 defines a test hole as the excavation made to determine, measure, and record the presence of a utility structure, and lists water jet and vacuum extraction systems among the typical minimally intrusive techniques for utility exposure. It also draws a distinction customers routinely miss: designating means marking approximate horizontal position from surface geophysics, while locating means exposing and recording the precise vertical and horizontal position. What is hydro vac excavation?

Hydro vac excavation, also called hydrovac or hydro excavation, removes soil using pressurized water and a powerful vacuum. Per TRUVAC, high pressure water is directed into the soil, turning it into a slurry, which the air vacuum then removes and transfers to a debris tank for later disposal. The vacuum is driven either by a positive displacement blower or a fan unit: PD blowers are the most popular option because they pull wet, heavy material over long distances, while fan units generate higher airflow and suit a wider range of soil types. Recommended working pressure typically falls between 2,000 psi and 3,000 psi, water tanks run 200 to 1,200 gallons, and debris bodies run 5 to 15 cubic yards. Because the hose reaches out from the truck, the dig can happen well away from where the unit is parked.
How deep can you hydro excavate?

Manufacturer GapVax states hydro vacs can commonly dig 20 feet to 30 feet, and as deep as about 70 feet with the right extension tooling and additional equipment. No manufacturer publishes an absolute maximum, because depth is governed by conditions rather than by a rating. GapVax names the real limits: water tank size, pressure that must stay low enough not to damage utility lines, how far the truck is parked from the work, soil type since clay is tougher than sand or silt, frozen ground, and debris tank capacity. TRUVAC adds that deep work is blower limited, so matching blower lift to excavation depth is crucial, and notes a standard blower may suffice within 200 ft of the truck while 600 ft calls for more power. One caveat: any excavation a person will enter remains subject to 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P protective system and egress rules.
What are the disadvantages of hydro excavation?

The honest list starts with the spoil. TRUVAC states slurry cannot be disposed of just anywhere, requiring designated dumping sites and adherence to environmental regulations, and that the resulting sludge is typically deemed unusable, so it cannot be reused as backfill the way mechanically dug soil can. That is real added disposal cost. TRUVAC also notes the upfront cost of a hydro excavator exceeds a traditional mechanical digger and demands more operator training, that sandy soil complicates debris removal, and that frozen ground requires hot water. GapVax adds that excessive pressure can damage utility lines, clay cuts slowly, and reach falls off as the truck sits farther from the work. The counterpoint from the same manufacturer matters: mechanical excavation carries potential damage to underground utilities and a higher risk of worker injury.
How much does hydro excavation cost per hour?

Industry reported ranges put hydrovac excavation at roughly $200 to $600 per hour in the United States as of 2026, with a US average of about $300 to $400 per hour for standard combination truck work, according to Hydrovac Hotline. Treat that with caution. It is a single industry directory source, not a survey with published methodology, and corroboration from a second independent source was not obtained, so it carries lower confidence than the code and standards figures elsewhere on this page. The same source reports project minimums of typically 4 hours including mobilization, and notes that major metros and oil and gas regions run higher while rural markets run lower. Cost drivers that actually move the number are soil, disposal distance, water source availability, truck configuration, prevailing wage, and traffic control. These are not Trinity prices. How much does hydro excavation cost per day?

Hydrovac Hotline reports daily rates of $2,400 to $4,800 for standard equipment crews, and after hours and emergency rates running 30 to 75 percent above standard. Again, that is one industry directory naming its own ranges, published without a stated methodology, and no second independent source corroborated it during our research, so read it as an industry reported range rather than a benchmark. A day rate is also not a fixed quantity of work: how many test holes a crew completes in a shift depends on depth, soil, how far the debris tank has to travel to a permitted receiving facility, and whether traffic control eats into productive hours. Where do hydrovac trucks dump?

Only at facilities permitted to receive that specific waste stream, which in practice means licensed liquid waste transfer stations, Class I or Class II landfills permitted for liquid or slurry waste, or municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants that accept non hazardous industrial waste, per Hydrovac News. Every one of those has acceptance criteria for solids content, pH, and contaminant concentrations that must be confirmed before a truck rolls. The governing framework is the EPA Resource Conservation and Recovery Act: Subtitle C for hazardous waste, Subtitle D for non hazardous solid waste administered through state programs. Because each state runs its own program, operators must verify the rules in the state where disposal occurs, not just where the job sits. Oklahoma specific slurry rules were not confirmed from a primary source in our research, so verify with the state program directly.
How much does a hydrovac excavation truck cost?

We will not publish a purchase price, because no verified figure exists to publish. Hydrovac units are quoted by configuration rather than sold off a published list price, and the configuration is where the money lives: chassis class, water tank and debris body capacity, blower size and lift, whether the unit is a trailer or a truck mounted combination machine, cold weather boiler packages, and new versus used. Two units with the same debris capacity can differ enormously once blower and chassis are specified. For a project owner, the purchase price is the wrong question anyway. What affects your budget is the day rate and the productivity behind it.
