Trenching Cost and Production Rates: How Excavation Work Is Priced

Nobody prices a trench by its length. Length is the easiest number on the sheet and the least important one. What actually sets the price is depth, soil and rock, whether live utilities sit in the corridor and have to be exposed by hand or by vacuum, what surface gets cut and has to be rebuilt, where the spoil goes, whether equipment can even reach the line, permits and traffic control, prevailing wage on public work, and whether the run can be bored instead of opened up at all.

This page publishes the ranges the industry actually reports, names the source of every figure in the visible text, and separates residential cost aggregator numbers from real public bid data, because they differ by a factor of five and understanding why is the whole education. It also walks the estimating method line by line, including the OKIE811 notice you have to schedule around before a machine moves. Nothing here is a Trinity price list.

Two very different sets of trenching numbers

Residential cost aggregators and public agency bid tabs describe different work. Read both before you budget anything.

Two honest caveats on the DOT column. The deeper depth bands in the South Dakota report were awarded on a single bid each, so they are real awarded prices but a thin sample. And public work carries prevailing wage, agency specifications, traffic control, inspection, and a separately bid trench protection system, which is precisely why those unit prices run several times the residential aggregator range. Notice also that the Texas data proves trench safety is its own pay item, not something folded into the dig. Reported production rates for a 100 ft trench

Figures below are for a residential trench about 24 inches deep. Three independent sources converge on roughly the same numbers.

Two things worth knowing about these rates. First, width matters as much as depth: Angi notes a trench 2 feet wide takes almost double the time of a trench 1 foot wide, and frozen ground can make soil almost as hard as concrete. Second, neither Vermeer nor Ditch Witch publishes a feet per hour production rating for a trencher. Manufacturers publish digging depth, horsepower and ground speed, and leave production to conditions and the operator. Anyone quoting you a manufacturer rated feet per hour figure is quoting something that does not exist, the same way no drill manufacturer publishes a maximum bore length.

How much does it cost to dig a 200 ft trench?

HomeGuide reports a 200 foot trench at $1,000 to $2,400 in 2026, built from a residential range of $5 to $12 per linear foot. That is a shallow yard trench in workable soil with no surface to rebuild. Cojo Excavation and Asphalt publishes a wider industry baseline of roughly $8 to $40 and above per linear foot for open cut excavation, restoration excluded, and South Dakota DOT bid tabs show public work trench at $39.27 per foot average low bid for the 0 ft to 6 ft band. Same length, a tenfold spread. Depth, rock, live utilities in the corridor, surface restoration, spoil haul off, access, permits, traffic control and prevailing wage move the number far more than the 200 feet does. If any of that 200 feet crosses pavement or finished landscaping, price a bore against it.

How much does it cost to dig a 30 foot trench?

On paper, 30 feet at the HomeGuide residential range of $5 to $12 per linear foot works out to roughly $150 to $360, and that arithmetic is almost always wrong. Short runs are dominated by fixed costs, not footage. Cojo Excavation and Asphalt reports mobilization at $250 to $800 and above flat, with most jobs carrying a minimum callout of $500 to $1,500 and above. A 30 foot job pays the same mobilization, the same OKIE811 ticket, the same utility exposure, and the same restoration per square foot as a long one, spread across almost no length. That is also why a 30 foot crossing under a driveway or sidewalk is frequently cheaper bored than trenched once you price cutting and patching the surface. There is no cut and no patch on a bore.

How long does it take to dig a 100 ft trench?

Anywhere from about one hour to two full working days, depending entirely on method. Angi reports a 100 foot trench 24 inches deep at 10 to 12 hours by hand, 2 to 3 hours with a walk behind trencher, and 1 to 2 hours with a ride on trencher, and Engineer Fix puts a single person hand digging in average soil at 5 to 10 linear feet per hour. HomeGuide gives the same 2 to 3 hour machine figure and notes it stretches in hard clay or rocky soil and when backfill is included. What those numbers all leave out is the day around the dig: the OKIE811 notice, exposing marked utilities, bedding, backfill and compaction, and surface restoration. How long does it take to trench 100 ft with a trencher?

With a machine, plan on 2 to 3 hours for a walk behind unit and 1 to 2 hours for a ride on unit at about 24 inches deep, per Angi, which works out to the 33 to 50 feet per hour rate Engineer Fix calculates for walk behind work. Machine choice is the variable. Ditch Witch guidance published by Green Industry Pros recommends a ride on trencher once a job exceeds 100 feet, and calls a walk behind more cost effective on smaller sites. Equipment World is blunter: once you move past 200 feet or so, you have to seriously consider switching to a ride on, and four wheel drive is a definite advantage in hard soil. Neither manufacturer publishes a feet per hour rating, so soil, chain condition and operator experience set actual output.

How long does it take to trench 500 feet?

Scale the published 100 foot rates and a 500 foot run works out to roughly 10 to 15 hours with a walk behind trencher at the 33 to 50 feet per hour rate Engineer Fix reports, or about 5 to 10 hours with a ride on unit using the 1 to 2 hours per 100 feet Angi reports. At that length the machine decision is already made for you. Equipment World advises seriously considering a ride on past roughly 200 feet, and Green Industry Pros notes the added weight and larger engine make a ride on more productive in tough ground. Then add the real schedule: the OKIE811 notice, potholing every marked crossing along 500 feet, pipe laying and bedding, compaction, and restoration. Long runs also multiply crossings, and each crossing is a candidate for a bore instead of a cut.

How do I quote a trenching job?

Work the sheet in order. Measure the run on the ground, not off the plan. Confirm required depth from the utility owner’s specification, since that sets the depth band and the protective system. Classify the soil, because clay, caliche and rock change everything. File the OKIE811 ticket and build the schedule around the three business day advance notice the Oklahoma Underground Facilities Damage Prevention Act requires, per the OKIE811 Excavator Guide. Price utility exposure as its own line, by hand or by vacuum inside the tolerance zone. Then price the trench by linear foot at that depth. Add bedding, backfill and compaction. Add surface restoration by square foot. Add traffic control. Add mobilization as a flat charge. Finally apply overhead and profit. Then ask the last question: should this be bored instead?

How much to excavate 3,000 sq ft?

That question has no answer until you state a depth, because area excavation prices by volume removed. Do the arithmetic yourself: 3,000 sq ft at 1 ft deep is 3,000 cubic feet, and 3,000 divided by 27 is about 111 cubic yards. At 2 ft deep it is about 222 cubic yards, at 3 ft about 333. Apply a unit rate to that volume. HomeGuide reports excavation at $2.50 to $15.00 per cubic yard depending on soil, from $2.50 to $6.00 in light soil up to $10.00 to $15.00 in heavy, wet soil or loose rock, and $50 to $200 and above per cubic yard where rock must be jackhammered. South Dakota DOT bid tabs put bulk unclassified excavation near $5.03 to $6.02 per cubic yard on public work. Haul off, swell and disposal are separate. Trinity quotes per project.

The variables that move a trenching price more than length does

Every one of these can change a bid by more than doubling the run would.

Variable Why it moves the price
Depth South Dakota DOT bid data shows the per foot price roughly tripling from the 0 ft to 6 ft band to the 12 ft to 14 ft band. Depth also triggers OSHA Subpart P protective systems and, above 20 feet, a system designed by a registered professional engineer.
Soil and rock HomeGuide reports light soil at $2.50 to $6.00 per cubic yard against $50 to $200 and above where rock must be jackhammered. Clay and caliche cut slowly and wear chain.
Utilities in the corridor Under 63 O.S. 142.7 powered equipment may not work directly over a marked facility until it is exposed and protected. Hand or vacuum exposure is a separate priced line, not an afterthought.
Surface type and restoration Cojo notes repaving a driveway, replacing a mature tree, or rebuilding a patio can dwarf the price difference between trenching and boring. This is the single most underestimated line on a trenching quote.
Spoil handling and haul off Reusable native backfill costs almost nothing to place. Unsuitable material means export, imported select fill, and truck cycles priced on loose volume rather than in place volume.
Access for equipment HomeGuide lists site accessibility and working around existing structures among the primary cost factors. Gate widths, slopes and overhead lines can force a smaller, slower machine.
Permits and traffic control Road cut permits, lane closures, flaggers and plates are real line items on public right of way work, and they consume productive hours as well as dollars.
Prevailing wage A large part of why the South Dakota DOT trench unit prices run several times the residential aggregator range for the same nominal work.
Bore versus trench Over a road, driveway, sidewalk or finished landscaping, directional boring is frequently cheaper all in than trenching once surface restoration is priced, because there is no cut and no patch.
