What Sets the Distance Limit on Any Bore
The practical maximum bore distance for any job is set by four factors working together: the rig’s thrust and pullback force capacity, the torque the drill string can transmit over the bore length, the friction load from the soil and the pipe being pulled, and the drilling fluid’s ability to carry cuttings from the drill head back to the entry pit over the full bore length. Any one of these can be the binding constraint on a long bore.
Thrust capacity is the rig’s ability to push the drill string forward and pull the product pipe back. As the bore gets longer and the pipe gets larger, the friction load on the drill string increases. At some point that load exceeds what the rig can handle and the bore must stop or the rig must be upgraded. Torque transmission capacity sets a similar limit – at long distances through resistive soil, the drill string cannot effectively transmit enough rotational force to keep the drill head cutting.
Fluid management becomes increasingly complex on long bores. Cuttings generated at the drill head must be carried in the drilling fluid all the way back to the entry pit. Intermediate pits are small excavations – typically 4 by 6 feet or similar – at a midpoint along the bore route. If the pit is in a road or parking lot, traffic control and surface restoration are required. If it is in a field or open lot, the pit is simply backfilled and restored after the pipe connection is made. The connection point must meet the same pressure and integrity requirements as the rest of the installation.
For fiber optic and communications conduit, intermediate splice vaults are sometimes placed at the intermediate pit location anyway for network access and maintenance.
