Utilities Installed With Directional Boring in Oklahoma

Directional boring is not limited to one type of utility. The same horizontal drilling process that installs a natural gas service under a driveway can install a water main under a road, fiber optic conduit across a creek, or electrical conduit through a landscaped commercial corridor. Understanding which utilities are installed with directional boring helps you plan your project, coordinate with your utility companies, and understand why one bore run can often accomplish multiple goals at once.
Natural gas lines
Natural gas service and distribution lines are one of the most common utilities installed with directional boring in Oklahoma. Medium-density polyethylene (MDPE or HDPE) gas pipe in SDR 11 wall thickness is the standard product, pulled back through the bore in a continuous run that eliminates the mechanical joints and corrosion risks associated with steel pipe. Oklahoma Corporation Commission rules and applicable pipeline codes govern installation depth, materials, and testing requirements.
Gas boring is common for both residential service extensions and distribution main expansions. A homeowner adding a natural gas line to a detached shop, pool heater, or outdoor kitchen typically needs a bore under the driveway and possibly under a landscaped area. Potable water lines
Water service lines and water mains are installed with directional boring across Oklahoma, from small residential service replacements to municipal distribution main crossings under roads. HDPE pressure pipe rated for potable water is the standard product. After boring, the pipe is disinfected to NSF 61 standards before being placed in service. Boring eliminates open-cut trenching under driveways, roads, and landscaping that would otherwise require extensive restoration.

Sewer force mains
Sewer force mains – pressurized sewer lines served by a lift station – are well-suited to directional boring because they do not require precise grade like gravity sewer does. HDPE pressure pipe rated for sewer service is pulled through the bore in a single run, crossing roads, drainage features, and other utilities that a gravity sewer would need to go around or under at significant depth.
Force main bores are common when extending wastewater service to new developments outside existing sewer service areas in Oklahoma. A lift station pumps sewage under pressure to a connection point at the gravity sewer system, and the force main runs between those two points. Boring under roads along the route eliminates multiple road cuts and road patches that would otherwise be required.

Boring is especially useful for irrigation contractors who need to cross driveways, sidewalks, or landscaped areas without cutting or patching. Running an empty HDPE sleeve under a new concrete pour is a common practice for Oklahoma builders planning future utility crossings.
Reclaimed water systems for commercial irrigation are expanding in Oklahoma, particularly in the Oklahoma City metro area. Electrical and low-voltage conduit are commonly bundled together. This approach maximizes the value of a single rig mobilization by installing multiple future-ready conduits in one pull-back. Gas and electrical in the same bore is typically prohibited by code, but same-utility bundles are standard practice.
When planning a directional boring project in Oklahoma, always ask whether you could add conduit for future utilities while the rig is already on site. The incremental cost of adding a second 2-inch conduit to a bore that is already sized for one is much lower than mobilizing a crew separately later. This is especially relevant for new construction, where the utility layout is known in advance and multiple future crossings can be pre-sleeved in one operation.
