Fire Line Installation in Oklahoma
Underground fire suppression lines are a life-safety system that protects buildings, property, and occupants from fire. A fire line is the underground water main that connects a building’s fire sprinkler system to the public water supply, providing the volume and pressure needed to operate sprinkler heads and standpipe systems in an emergency. Installing fire lines typically requires boring beneath driveways, parking lots, landscaped areas, and public right-of-way, making directional boring the preferred installation method for fire line work at commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings across Oklahoma.
Trinity Boring Solutions provides fire line boring and installation services across Oklahoma. We bore and install fire suppression supply mains from the public water main connection at the street to the fire riser connection at the building. Our fire line work serves new construction projects requiring initial fire line installation, existing buildings adding fire sprinkler systems, and fire line replacement projects where existing lines have failed or reached end of life.
Fire line sizes range from 4-inch to 12-inch depending on the building’s fire suppression demand, the available water supply pressure and flow, and the hydraulic design of the sprinkler system. Trinity Boring Solutions installs fire mains in these diameters, bored through the soil with minimum surface disturbance. We work closely with fire protection engineers, fire sprinkler contractors, and the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) to ensure our fire line boring and installation meets all applicable code requirements.
Oklahoma fire protection code is based on the NFPA codes, including NFPA 13 for sprinkler systems, NFPA 24 for the installation of private fire service mains, and applicable International Fire Code provisions adopted by local jurisdictions. The Oklahoma State Fire Marshal’s Office provides oversight of fire protection system installation across the state. Local fire marshals and building departments have jurisdiction over fire system permits and inspections in their communities. Trinity Boring Solutions installs fire lines in compliance with NFPA 24 and works with fire protection contractors and building departments to meet local AHJ requirements.
Water main connections for fire lines require coordination with the local water utility. A fire main tap on the public water main must be approved by the water utility, and the tap and valve assembly are typically inspected by utility staff. In some communities, the water utility performs the tap connection while the contractor provides the installation downstream of the tap valve. Trinity Boring Solutions coordinates with local water utilities for fire line connection requirements in each jurisdiction where we work.

Fire line bores under public streets, commercial driveways, and private roads. ODOT and municipal encroachment permits managed for fire lines crossing public right-of-way.
Large Facility Fire Systems
Multi-building fire main loops for industrial facilities, university campuses, and large commercial developments. Campus fire main boring installs fire supply infrastructure with minimum surface disruption.
Fire Line Installation Process
- Fire Protection Coordination: We coordinate with the fire protection engineer and sprinkler contractor on fire main size, material, installation depth, and routing. Fire main design is driven by hydraulic calculations performed by the fire protection engineer, and our installation must match the design specifications.
- AHJ Permit Requirements: Fire line installation requires a permit from the local authority having jurisdiction, typically the fire marshal and building department. We work with the general contractor and fire protection contractor to obtain required permits before installation begins.
- Water Utility Coordination: We coordinate with the local water utility for tap-on requirements, inspection schedule, and any utility-specific requirements for the fire main connection to the public water system.
- OK 811 Locates: We call OK 811 for utility locates before any excavation. Fire main routing must avoid existing underground utilities to prevent conflicts with the established utility infrastructure.
- Boring and Pipe Installation: The fire main is bored to the required depth and alignment. Ductile iron or HDPE fire mains are common materials for bored fire line installations. Material selection is per the fire protection engineer’s specification and local AHJ requirements.
- Pressure Testing: Installed fire mains are hydrostatically pressure tested per NFPA 24 requirements before backfilling. Test records are provided to the fire protection contractor for AHJ submittal and fire protection system commissioning documentation.
- Flush and Disinfect: New fire water mains are flushed to verify flow rates and disinfected per AWWA C651 before connection to the building fire sprinkler system. Bacteriological water quality samples may be required by the water utility before the connection is approved.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pipe material do you use for bored fire lines?
Ductile iron and HDPE are the most common pipe materials for directionally bored fire mains. Ductile iron is widely accepted by AHJs and meets NFPA 24 requirements. HDPE is increasingly accepted and offers excellent corrosion resistance for buried fire mains. Material selection is determined by the fire protection engineer’s specification and local AHJ acceptance. We install the material specified by the design engineer.
What is the minimum depth for an underground fire main?
NFPA 24 and local codes specify minimum cover requirements for underground fire mains. Minimum cover is typically 30 to 42 inches below finished grade depending on local frost depth and the applicable code. Boring installs the fire main well below minimum cover requirements, typically at 4 to 6 feet, which also provides additional protection from surface loads.
Do you pull the fire main or bore it in place?
For directional boring fire line installations, the fire main pipe is pulled through the bore path after the pilot bore and reaming are complete. The pipe is pre-assembled in a straight pull section and pulled through the reamed bore. End connections are then made to the public water main tap and the building fire riser by the plumbing contractor or fire sprinkler contractor.
Can you bore a fire line under an existing commercial parking lot?
Yes. Boring is the preferred method for fire line installation beneath existing parking lots because it avoids excavating and repaving the parking lot surface. The only surface disturbance is at the bore entry and exit pits, which are small and easy to restore after installation is complete.
Do you work with fire sprinkler contractors on fire line projects?
Yes. Fire line boring is typically performed in close coordination with the fire sprinkler contractor who designs the sprinkler system and installs the above-grade fire suppression piping. We integrate our underground fire main installation with the fire sprinkler contractor’s schedule for the fire riser connection, hydrostatic testing, and project completion.
Can you bore a fire line under a state highway to connect a building fire main to the public water system?
Yes. When the public water main is on the opposite side of a state highway from the building, an ODOT encroachment permit is required for the fire main crossing. We handle the ODOT permit application and install the fire main crossing in compliance with ODOT specifications. Permit timing should be factored into the project schedule as ODOT processing takes several weeks.
What pressure testing is required for a bored fire line?
NFPA 24 requires a hydrostatic pressure test at 200 psi for 2 hours, or at 50 psi above the maximum static pressure when static pressure exceeds 150 psi. All installed fire mains must pass this test before the pipe is connected to the fire sprinkler system and the system is placed in service. We perform and document the hydrostatic test as part of our fire line installation process.
Can you install the fire hydrant lateral as well as the main fire line?
Yes. We install private fire hydrant laterals as part of fire line installations at commercial and industrial properties. Hydrant laterals are tapped from the fire main and brought up to grade for the fire hydrant connection by the fire protection or plumbing contractor. Boring or open excavation may be used for hydrant laterals depending on the routing and length.
Do you serve municipalities and water utilities for water main boring on public systems?
Yes. We perform water main boring for municipalities, rural water districts, and public utility authorities across Oklahoma. Municipal water main boring is closely related to fire line installation work, and our crews are experienced with both types of water main installation. See our main directional boring services pages for more information.
